History of the 9th Air Force
After being active from 1942 in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean and in North-East Africa (Egypt, Palestina), the IXth Air Force was directed to the European Theater of Operations and came to the UK.
Reactivation of the IXth Air Force in the UK took place on October 16th, 1943. Commander was Major General Brereton.
Chief of Staff: Brig. General Strahm.
HQ was at Sunninghill Park, Berkshire, England (nr. Ascot).
Major part for the new IXth Air Force came from units in the UK.
Units that became part of the new IXth Air Force included the VIII Air Support Command and the VIII Tactical Air Service Area Command, becoming IX Air Support Command and XIX Air Support Commond respectively.
The 1st Fighter Division (Provisional) of the 8th AF (VIIIth AF) helped to form the IX Fighter Command.
The IXth Air Force consisted of:
- IX Bomber Command, activated on October 16th, 1943.
- IX Service Command
- IX Fighter Command (most of it came in from Africa)
- IX Air Force Service Command, with HQ at Grove, Berkshire, England.
- IX Troop Carrier Command, founded in the UK on October 16th, 1943.

In the preparation for the invasion of Europe on 18 April 1944 the IX ASC became IX TAC and XIX ASC became XIX TAC.
Other changes that took place:
December 15th, 1943 The IX AF came under control of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF).
August 1944 the IX Bomber Command became the 9th Bombardement Division.
