The 9th AF in the E.T.O.


IX Fighter Command
The IX Fighter Command, activated on October 16th, 1943.
The IX FC consisted of five Wings with fighters;
  • the 70th FW,
  • the 71st FW,
  • the 84th FW,
  • the 100th FW,
  • and 303rd FW.
Three Tactical Air Commands were created for operational use; IXth TAC, XIXth TAC and XXIXth TAC.

First there were the Air Support Commands:
IX ASC became IX TAC on 18 april 1944,
XIX ASC became XIX TAC on april 1944.
The aircraft that were used were P38, P47 and P51 Fighters. Also some F5 and F6 Recce aircraft were used by the squadrons, thus becoming Recce Fighters.

The Fighter Groups flew with the IXth TAC, the XIXth TAC and the XXIXth TAC.
