History
The squadron officially formed at Burscough in March 1944 as a fighter squadron with 10 Hellcat Is. Not being officially a Dutch squadron, we mention this squadron because 75% of the squadron pilots being from the Royal Netherlands Navy.
End may 1944 1840 squadron and 1847 squadron merged into 1840 squadron. Subsequently the squadron embarked HMS Furious (Home Fleet).
In July 1944 it embarked with 20 aircraft on HMS Furious for Operation Mascot, a Barracuda led dive-bombing attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in Kaa Fjord, northern Norway. No.1840 had no losses. The other squadrons in this operation lost three aircraft. The squadron returned to Scapa Flow. Six Dutch pilots left the squadron for service from Malta.
In August 1944 the squadron took part in further strikes on the Tirpitz, its CO L/C AR Richardson, RNZNVR being shot down by enemy fire, and the squadron shooting down at least 1 enemy aircraft.
On august 8th 1944 the squadron embarked the HMS Indefatigable. The squadron trained at he Indefatigable from september 1st till december 31st 1944. At that date the 1840 squadron embarked HMS Speaker for going to the Pacific, where it provided fighter coverage of the British Pacific Fleet. End of january 1945 the 1840 squadron (no. 3 wing) took part in attacks on Palembang (Dutch East Indies. At that moment only three Dutch pilots were active in no. 3 Wing. Subsequently the squadron was absorbed into 1839 Squadron and no. 1840 Squadron was disbanded in april 1945.
