September 19th 1944

On September 19th 1944 a Stirling EF248 of no.196 Squadron crashed west of Jachthuis Warnsborn, about 1 km west of Arnhem, Netherlands.
The aircrraft was hit by German Flak.

Air despatcher Driver W.J. CHAPLIN, Died of wounds 11.11.1944 Air despatcher Driver F.G. SMITH, KIA both of 63 (Airborne) Composite Company, RASC
F/O. R.C. Gibbs, was wounded and taken to the Municipal Hospital, where he died on 21st September 1944. First buried in the gardens of this hospital, later reinterred at Oosterbeek War Cemetery.

The graves of the crew-members killed were found in different spots:
Chalkey near the chicken coop of "Groote Kweek",
Matthews along the Amsterdamseweg,
and Powderhill and Hooker in the garden of "Kleine Kweek".
All were reinterred at Arnhem-Oosterbeek War Cemetery.


Homebase of no.196 Sq. was Keevil, Wilts.
